Product details for QNAP TS-453BT3-8G 4-bay NAS

The TS-453BT3-8G desktop NAS from QNAP efficiently stores your files and data. Unlike traditional external hard drives, you can simultaneously connect all computers in your network to this NAS (network-attached storage) device. It offers you sufficient storage space and requires significantly less electricity than regular PCs. The desktop NAS device and is equipped with an Intel Celeron J3455 1.5 GHz processor. The 8 GB RAM allows several users to access data at the same time. This desktop NAS system has the following data storage forms available: 0, 10, 6, 5, 1, 10 + hot spare, 6 + hot spare, 5 + hot spare and JBOD. Using a JBOD architecture to create a multi-disk storage space means you can combine hard drives of random sizes and will not lose the storage capacity of any of them. This is not the case with RAID levels.

When using RAID 0, hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work in parallel — this means a higher, faster performance as computer tasks are not handled by just one drive. However, there is no fault tolerance because data is not mirrored, which means this RAID level is better suited for high speed storage of large volumes of data. When using RAID 1 your data will be mirrored from one drive to another so that if one fails you will not lose any information. This fault tolerance also means that your total drive storage capacity is halved due to duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. Using RAID 5 means your data is split among multiple hard drives — when one drive has an error the data is copied and distributed to the other drives. With this method you can retain the storage capacity of all your drives. It's the ideal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three drives. RAID 6 offers you high data security and is still operational even if two hard drives in the system fail.
